The Making of an Icon

Handcrafting an Akubra

Every Akubra hat is the result of a meticulous, time-honoured craft. Made in Australia for 150 years using a 162-step hat making process, each hat is shaped through generations of expertise and traditional techniques. | From the early stages of forming and blocking the fur felt through to trimming and finishing, every step contributes to the durability, character and iconic style that Akubra hats are known for.

felting

Using a combination of heat, steam, water and pressure, the felt is gradually shrunk and strengthened. This process transforms loose fibres into a dense, durable felt renowned for its longevity and weather resistance.

dying

The hat is then dyed and proofed before being softened with heat and moisture, allowing it to become pliable enough for shaping.

It’s this balance of water, heat and craftsmanship that gives an Akubra its remarkable strength and ability to last for generations.

from bush to beach

adventure

The original adventurers of Australia—drovers, bushmen, and explorers—relied on their Akubras as they charted the unknown. These hats became a signature piece of the Australian uniform, perched on the heads of those who forged new paths and endured the elements.

The wide brim provided much-needed shade on long journeys across sunburnt plains, while the sweatband ensured comfort through sweltering days. Every crease and stain told a story of the wearer’s journey—a badge of honour earned through hard work and resilience.

Crafting Stage IV

Once formed, each hat undergoes a meticulous sanding and polishing process.

Crafting Stage V

As the hat spins through specialised machinery, skilled hands smooth the felt’s surface, removing loose fibres and refining its texture.

Crafting Stage VI

Multiple finishing stages create the soft, premium feel and rich finish synonymous with an Akubra. Every imperfection is carefully checked before moving to the next stage.

The iconic silhouette of an Akubra is created through the hands of our Master Hatters.

Crafting Stage VIII

the finishing touch

The final stage brings each hat to life. Leather sweatbands are carefully sewn into place, hat bands and trims are added, and each brim receives its finishing touches. Every hat is inspected by hand before receiving its final lining or stamp of authenticity.

Only once it has passed these final quality checks is an Akubra ready to leave the workshop and begin its next adventure.
